So, here I am weighing in very late. I'm one of those rare few writers who thinks I'm well paid for the work I perform. Granted, I'm never gonna make Forbes/ billionaire list (unless my forthcoming Screw You! book REALLY takes off), but I do all right for myself, especially for the region of the country I live in. Of course, you see me ranting about all the low-paying jobs out there on my blog, but other than to poke a little fun at them, for the most part I ignore them. I prefer not to get into the entire "writers' pay" debate, because as you said, it will never die. I did want to say to you, however, that I agree.<br /><br />Especially being a freelancer, I feel no right or responsibility to band together with anyone to come up with a standard wage. I'll charge what I feel is fair for my work, and only do work that I feel pays fair for my time. I'm not going to complain that someone with less talent who required less pay took my work. I'd rather work for someone else anyway.<br /><br />Besides, there is an entire shift in the writing world going on that nobody can stop. Especially in the world of content writing. Why? Computers and the internet are relatively new. Blogs are new. The way readers view the web and search for data and buy products is changing. Things are evolving. What clients want to buy, and how much they want to pay for it, is inevitably going to change as well. <br /><br />If I want to know something about parenting, I'd Google it before I'd go out and subscribe to a parenting magazine. I'd rather read my news online than subscribe to the local paper. All this loss in revenue for all purchasers is trickling down. Accept it. Adjust.
